School for Hearing and Speech Impaired

The Red Cross School for Hearing Impaired is an integral part of the Indian Red Cross Society at Pune. The School was established in the year 1976 as there was no special school in the vicinity for children coming from lower socio-economic groups. Besides 80 plus children, the staff includes the Principal, 9 special teachers, five part-time teachers, a dance teacher, a sports teacher, and speech therapists. The school students are provided with hearing aids at No Cost.

Currently, the classes are till the 7th class with only 16 children per class. Coaching classes are also held for SSC for differently-abled children in the same premises. These children have excelled consistently in academics, sports, cultural programs, yoga competitions, art, and crafts. Such differently-abled children are identified from among the weaker sections of the society by counselors specially appointed by the Society. The parents of these children are also counseled by them.

Project Overview

The land where the school building is proposed has been allotted by the Ministry of Defence on a long lease and is currently in possession of the Society. A stone compound wall has been constructed to protect the property and a FREE OPD facility is already operational at the site. Security guards are present on the site round the clock. The structure planned currently is Ground plus three floors to accommodate the school for the hearing impaired and a Medical Centre. With the Unified Development Rules implemented recently by the Maharashtra Government, there is going to be scope for further expansion of the same building or construction of another building on the same site.

Site Photographs

The site is located on the main Kondhwa Road connecting Kondhwa and MG Road. It can be approached from another 15 feet road that bifurcates from the Bibwewadi – Kondhwa road. These roads give access to the location for anyone approaching from Camp, Kondhwa, Lulla Nagar, NORTH PROPOSED SITE EXISTING FACILITY Wanowrie and Bibwewadi. The new Command Hospital and MH CTC Centre is just half a kilometre away from this location.

The land is in level but rocky and may require consultations from Soil Investigators to define the parameters of the same during construction. These levels will further define the quantum of work required, considering the road level / finished ground level of the area in the close proximity of the plot.

Multiple approach roads to the site will assist in construction activity and the site provides sufficient area for stocking the construction material, which will further assist in un-interrupted construction work.
